December Doings

What's Happening
in the House
This Week

Wow!  This is the last weekend before Christmas!  Kinda gives ya pause, doesn't it?  As I wrote that I almost went down the rabbit trail of "where does that phrase come from?", but we don't have time for that - HaHa!  So here's what's going on this week.....

Demo Day
Saturday - 10 am to 4pm

Yep, we are going to have it Saturday.  You know we have fun.  We have a wonderful Make-It-Take-It from Impression Obsession.  It's really sweet.  Lisa is hard at work on her class schedule for January.  Since Valentine goodies are just now coming out, it'll be a partial schedule.  She'll have more for you right after the 1st (I think).  Select Christmas items will be 50% OFF beginning Saturday.  AND there will be a small gift with every purchase.   Oh, I see that I have forgotten to tell you that I will have my Kuerig here so you can have hot chocolate, cappuccino, coffee and hot apple cider.  Now you know!  Grab a friend and let's have one last fling for 2014.  We think you'll enjoy it.

CHARACTER CONSTRUCTION
NEW COLLECTION

No, it's not in yet, but Catherine is just about ready to reveal all.....  Hoping to have a flyer so you can special order Saturday, but it's not here yet.  We have, however, given her our initial order so we can have it here as soon as it is available to ship.

One of Catherine's good friends is sponsoring a "Tea for 2" Character Construction swap.  I'll have details for you to pick up on Saturday if you want to participate (you do need to register to participate).  In the mean time you can check out the Pinterest Page for past submissions.  Exciting, I tell ya!

December 2014

Balzer Designs
Carve December

Julie Fei-Fan Balzer challenges herself to create art everyday.  This month she challenged herself to carve a stamp every day and invited her followers to join in.  Although December is already half gone, it's never too late to join in the fun.  If you would like to join in you can find the details here..... #CarveDecember.  Although I haven't had time to carve every day, I have joined in and have had an incredibly fun time.  Here are some of the results:

My first attempt...  Hey, you gotta start somewhere!

This one made it to Julie's blog.  You can see what she has done so far and some of the designs of others she chose to highlight.

Gotta do the whole set - right?  Good thing you can use the 6 for the 9 cuz it was another oops! event.

Note to self: Do NOT use the blue carving rubber again!  It crumbles ...

The ambitious design!  Not bad for a beginner and I'm glad I tried it.  I'll try again when I have more experience.....

If you post on Instagram or just lurk there, check out the hashtag #CarveDecember.  There is a lot of carving inspiration there.  Seriously .... carving can be addictive!

That's it for now...  Until next post...  Happy Creatin'!

"METAMORPHOSIS

an in-depth workshop

taught by

DONNA DOWNEY

JANUARY 24 & 25

How many times have you wanted to travel to an artist's studio to take a fabulous 2 day in depth class but had to pass because of the travel expenses?  Here is your chance to take an in depth workshop from one of the mixed-media masters without that burden.  Donna Downey is taking her "metamorphosis" Artbooking class on the road and we are one of the first stores to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.  You will be able to learn many exciting mixed-media techniques while creating this amazing fabric book.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

 “Metamorphosis”
mixed-‐media fabric ARTbooking workshop

As the title suggests, this workshop is about transformation, the literal transformation of the medias and surfaces as we work in layers, but also the adaptations you as the Artist will bring and incorporate into your own pieces.

Using muslin fabric as your substrate, you will begin building structural layers by adding thin layers of joint compound and wet mediums giving your pages a textural, sculpted feel. In class I will work along with you modeling the processes and demonstrating how bendability and color can play into your overall designs. We will discuss “mark making” and use this skill as a means to incorporate each Artist’s own signature into their work and build upon that style by identifying the theme of your ARTbook using image transfers
.
By further understanding glazes and finishes your books transformation from fabric to ART will emerge, and lastly we will finish by binding your completed ARTbooking piece.

This is an "all-inclusive" event.  All supplies will be provided including a light lunch both days for the price of $425. This workshop will be limited to 20 students.

ENROLLMENT IS NOW OPEN.  Enrollment must be made by email (maura@myheartsfancyok.com)  and will be on a first come first served basis.  If the class fills before you can enroll, I will add you to the wait list in the same first come first served basis.  I will confirm your enrollment within 1 business day (Sundays & Mondays excluded).  Class Fee &  Cancellation policy can be found below.

"Metamorphosis"  is one of Donna's newest classes.  She brings her working knowledge of materials and love of mixed-media to the table so you can experience the fun and excitement of mixed-media in all it's fullness.

I am excited to offer this new workshop concept to you.  Whether you are one of my local friends or one of my not-so-distant out-of town friends, this is an incredible opportunity.  Join Donna and me for this memorable journey in mixed-media.

Simple Storage

Stencil Storage

So, storage seems to be a problem for everyone.  So many stamps, so little space... so many stencils, so many tangles...  so many ink pads, so little space...  so many dies, so little space....  the list goes on and on.

Not too long ago I was reading Julie Fei-Fan Balzer's blog.  Now, you know she is one of the Queens of stencils.  Her designs are a favorite in the Crafter's Workshop line.  Anyway, she was talking about how she stores her stencils and it made total sense to me.  Here's what she inspired me to do:

Grab a D-ring scrapbook binder! 'You want D-rings 'cuz your pages will stick out from the binder if you don't.  There are lots out there.....  I used one from American Crafts.

Lots of colors available, chipboard covers & fabric.  All of them are good......

I chose the chipboard with lime green fabric on the spine (cuz there is no orange and I kinda like lime).  You can paint or stencil on the fabric covers.  You can paint, stencil, paper or collage on the chipboard ones.   I keep saying I'm going to get mine fussed up.  I'll make a commitment right now - as soon as I do it I'll publish a pic.  Now I'm going to have to get to it - right?!

Then you'll need 12"x12" page/scrapbook protectors.  We R Memory and American Crafts make many different configurations in 12"x12" page styles.

You can get (and I keep them in stock) 12x12 full sheet,  6x6 pockets (4 pockets to a 12x12 sheet) and 4x4 pockets (9 to a 12x12 sheet). The American Crafts binders come with 10 12x12 single sheet protectors.  Good for a start, but you'll need more if you have lots of stencils.  Anyhoo.....  here's what they'll look like when you start to fill them:

 6x6 pockets

12x12 sheet

Didn't photo my 4x4 sheets, but you get the drift.

Protectors keep your stencils from tangling and they are easy to see.  Your notebooks will store easily on a shelf.  You might be able put 2 stencils in each pocket.  If you do, you'll want to place paper between them so you can easily see the individual stencils and keep them untangled in their pockets.

We have the D-ring notebooks in stock and all 3 of the sheet protector styles in stock.  Hope this idea makes your stencil storage easier....  I know it has made mine so much simpler!

That's it for now!   Until next post.... Happy Creatin'!
