Class Review - AJS - August 2017

Art Journaling Saturday

So we started a new "thing" this year called Art Journaling Saturday.  Lisa and I had been asked late last year if we had an art journaling group and were embarrased to say "no".  It got me to thinking. Uh oh,.....  I know, scary! Right?

I mulled it over for a while.  A long while.  I wanted to do it right.  And in February we had our very first Art Journaling Saturday.  26 Brave Souls joined us for what has become a fun and amazing journey into art journaling.

So just what is "art journaling"?, you ask.

It is a journey of exploration, art play time, rewarding and disappointing at times.... but it is exciting.  In a nutshell art journaling is playing with art products in a blank book of art paper - one that you buy or one that you make. You play with new products and new techniques.  You try new things. Sometimes it works and sometimes it fails.  But it never disappoints because you always learn something.  And now we have learned that sharing the journey with friends - new and old - is rewarding and fun.

So, with all that in mind, I invite you to take a look at some of the art that was created in August's Art Journaling Saturday.

Lisa and I create a page in our journals based on a product we want to explore or a technique we want to try.  One month Lisa guides and the next I guide.  August was my month and here is the page I put out for a sample....

It is a 2 page spread.  The butterfly is split down the middle.  The left half is on a top page that is torn where the butterfly is split.  The other half of the butterfly rests on the second page.  It was something I had seen on Pinterest (who doesn't like to find inspiration there!?) and I really loved the idea.  The second thing I wanted to explore were the Tim Holtz stains.  They've been around a long time and I personally hadn't used them in several years.  Out they came and the fun began.  I do like the soft watercolor look you can get with them.  I think I'll be using them more in the future.

So that was my page and here is some of the art other brave souls created in their session.....

I think it was a succesful day.  I love all the different colors chosen and the different images the artists chose to use.

If you would like to join us, we have an Art Journaling Saturday once a month. All you need is the willingness to try and an art journal (homemade or purchased).  We supply most of the art products need and the materials fee is a reasonable $15.  There are 2 sessions offered - 10 am OR 2 pm and each session lasts up to 3 hours.

I hope you'll think about joining us for fun and laughter (yes, we laugh regularly) and lots of ooohs and aaaaahhhs.  And remember to.....

Last Week in the House

FUN!  FUN!  CLASSES!!!!

Oh my! What fun we had last week!

We had a birthday party class last week and it was soooo much fun.  Lisa is always happy to do private when you can gather 5 or more people.  If you have 3 and don't mind sharing your party with others, we can open the class up to our regulars... and that is just what happened when our friend Lorena asked Lisa to teach the Master Page Create class for her sister Kathia's 40th birthday party....  Here are a few photos from the class.

Pages in progress.......

The birthday girl at work...

and the party girls with their finished work!

THANKS Lorena for bringing Kathia and letting us treat her to a wonderful party!

The next day Chris Mack brought her Marbling class to the store.  We set up for 10 wonderful artists - some of whom are just beginning to play with art!  Chris gave perfect instructions and everyone made amazing marbled papers to use creating just about anything they can imagine....

Here are a few shots of the process before the paper is printed.....

The top shot is in the beginning stages and the second shot is ready for paper! Here are a few of the papers that were created.....  I'll be listening for the ooohs and ahhhs when you see them!  lol

I hope you've enjoyed a little look into some of what goes on around here.

And if you're interested in more....  check out the Zen Painting Workshop that Jodi Ohl is bringing to us next month!

That's it for now!  Hope to see you soon and remember to .....

Guest Artist Jodi Ohl

Jodi Ohl
Zen Painting Workshop
September 29-30

I am so over the top excited to bring Jodi Ohl to our little House!  I had been following Jodi for a while on Instagram and my heart just kept nagging me to ask if she would come.  She delightfully agreed and she will be presenting her Zen Painting Workshop here on September 29-30.

Jodi is a self-taught mixed media artist, author and instructor.  She is a full time artist who has built a body of work known for it's distinctive texture and bold color combinations which are often whimsical or abstract, as well as motivational in nature.

Jodi's blog, Sweet Repeats, features a full listing of classes, weekly musing and artwork for sale.

Zen Painting Workshop

In the spirit of what's at the core of artistic endeavors, this unique workshop created by Jodi truly soothes your artistic soul through a "Zen-full" Painting experience.  Go beyond the doodle and work on unique artist grade hard surfaces while exploring how to take your pencil, pen, inks, paints, and watercolors to a new abstract level.  You'll create amazing surreal flowing shapes and patterns, full of drama and depth while guided by Jodi.

Over the course of our weekend together we will:

Create several small works of "Zen Art" during the first part of our course as we learn all about our tools, surfaces and the Zen Painting process before diving into a larger main painting during the second session.

Some of the many things we will be focusing on: Creating lines with drama, using shading and negative spaces to build depth, creating texture with writing instruments, how to incorporate water colors with acrylics, tips and techniques for working on unique surfaces along with much, much more!

CLASS FEE:  $275

CLASS HOURS:  10 am to 5 pm both days with a break for lunch.

STUDENT SUPPLIES NEEDED:
4 pack of multi size India Ink Pens - Suggested brand: Faber Castell
