 Explore Joanne's newly published book "The Art of Whimsical Lettering" and create a journal with her favorite lettering techniques.  This workshop will discover and embrace lettering ideas and samples while learning "artful lettering" style secrets using pens, marker and creative tools making a playful resource for lettering practice.  Focus on identifying your own distinct lettering preferences, composition and aesthetically pleasing pages.

Students are required to bring the following supplies:  Wide ruled, school grade hard cover composition book, your favorite lettering markers, small watercolor (pans) set, black pens, alcohol markers (Copic, Prismacolor, Kaiserfusion), black waterproof pens like Micron or Pitt, pencil, eraser & glue stick.

The Artful Hearts Painted Journal

Create a painted and sculpted, shaped and hand lettered whimsical journal called the "Artful Hearts Journal".  You are cordially invited to embrace your care free, adventurous inner art girl to create perfectly imperfect mixed media art.  Loosen up and let your creativity roar on paper.  Construct a luscious, 16 page journal while exploring assorted paints, inks, stencils, collage, stamps, textures and lettering.  This invigorating artful play class will have you making art with abandon, releasing all your grown up art making fears and inhibitions.  Joanne will provide your paper journal for big art fun!

Student required supplies:  gel matte medium, white gesso, 4-5 acrylic paints in your favorite colors, paintbrushes for acrylic paint (1" flat, #6 & #10 rounds), fine and/or medium point white acrylic paint pen (Sharpie Poster Paint Pen) Signo white gel pen, glue stick, apron, baby wipes, scissors, craft mat, craft heat tool.

Power Pens and Perfect Pages

Here is everything you need to know about the perfect tools for lively art journal pages and whimsical lettering.  All pens and markers are not created equal, and neither is the paper you use to write with them on!  Explore, experiment and discover the hottest pens and papers for art journaling and mixed media art.  Learn the unique features and chemistry of alcohol, dye based, pigment, gel, metallic, India ink, and paint pens and markers from Copic, Tombow, Faber Castell, Prismacolor, Sharpie and Sakura.  Make an illustrated sampler art journal showcasing 20 lettering, coloring and doodling techniques.

Required Student supplies: Strathmore Visual Journal - 90 lb Watercolor paper 5"x8", and a handful of your favorite pens from your own stash to explore, pencil, eraser.  Instructor & store will provide assorted pens for adventures in "pen play".

Do you love the idea of making art with your favorite quotes and lettering?  Learn 12 playful lettering, illustration, design and composition techniques to showcase your favorite inspirations on colorful backgrounds in lively lettering styles.  Experiment with assorted pens, brushes, inks and paints to complete your masterpieces.  A strong emphasis will be on making stylized letter forms and focusing on the development of a signature look elaborating on your own personal handwriting.  In addition to creating small sampler paintings in your journal, you will finish and take home a completed 9x12 illustration ready for framing.

Student Supplies required:  Strathmore Visual Journal - Watercolor 90 lb paper in 5x8 size, favorite waterproof black ink pens in various tip sizes such as Pitt pens, Microns, Uniball or Zig, small watercolor set (Koi or Prang suggested), #4 & #8 ROUND watercolor brush, Niji waterbrush size medium, craft heat tool for drying work.

In case you didn't know, Dina Wakley is one of my all time favorite artists and I am always happy when she comes for a visit and to teach.  She was one of the first artists I asked to come to Oklahoma when I was learning to be brave.  You see, they can't come if you don't ask.  I still have to screw up my courage when I ask someone new to teach, but I'm getting better.  Didn't you have loads of fun when I got brave enough to ask Joanne Sharpe?  I know I did...

Conquering Color

This is part of Dina's new Art Journal Play Series which are about exploring and playing with art journaling techniques.  Do you have trouble deciding which colors to use together?  Join Dina as you conquer color!  You will make color charts with your paints and then you will practice specific color schemes.  You'll play with split-complementary, triadic, analogous with complement, just to name a few.  Dina will show you how to take each color scheme and make a vibrant page with it.  She will give you tips and techniques for managing color and using contrast effectively.  You'll mix ink and acrylics to give interesting layers and color effects.  

Supplies you need to bring:  Basic Class Kit, Art Journal (Dylusions  recommended), Gesso, Gel medium (DW Media recommended), Acrylic Paints, Rubber stamps, Black Archival Ink Pad, journaling pens.  Optional supplies:  ink sprays and stencils

Dina has taught this one here before, but I still get requests for face art classes.  Dina says you CAN draw faces!  She taught herself to do it and she will teach you too.  Using easy tips, tricks and the "magic" pencil you will make artsy and interesting faces.  She'll also show you how to paint the faces with artistic, fun colors. 
Supplies you need to bring: Basic Class Kit, White gesso, Acrylic paints (must include Titanium White & a dark color for shadows such as raw umber or Payne's grey.  DW Media recommended - Night subs well for Payne's grey), Gel medium (matte - DW Media recommended), Small flat & small round paint brush (Claudine Helmuth assortment recommended).

Another Art Journal Class, Dina will teach you to create art journal pages that represent strength and positive thought.  You will use Dina's new rubber stamp sets and stencils to create pages that are both beautiful and meaningful.  Dina will teach you about composition and creating pages from the bottom layer up.  Come and play with dina's stamps and stencils and have lots of fun!

Supplies you need to bring:  Basic Class Kit, art journal (Dylusions recommended), white acrylic gesso, Gel Medium (soft preferred such as DM Media Gel Medium), Acrylic paint (your favorite colors, include white, a dark neutral and a red/pink and a yellow), Plastic palette knife, paintbrushes, Black Archival ink pad.  Optional: ink sprays and stencils.

Beyond the Ink Pad

Another in the Art Journal Play series, this class explores one of our favorite additions, rubber stamps.   You will go beyond the ink pad and use stamps with Pan Pastels, acrylic paints, crayons, gelatos and more.  Dina will show you techniques for creating and then you will build finished pages on top of your stamping - that means you'll consider color, composition and layers as you finish your work.

Supplies you need to bring:  Basic Class Kit, art journal (Dylusions recommended), Gesso, Gel Medium (soft preferred - DM Media), acrylic paints, rubber stamps - bring your muses, Archival Black ink pad, journaling pens.  Optional:  PanPastels, Gelatos, watercolor crayons, ink sprays and stencils.

BASIC CLASS KIT DETAILS  Please be sure you have the following items in your basic kit.  Non-stick craft sheet, paint bushes, rag/cloth, pencil, scissors, water container to clean your brushes, scraper (Ranger or old plastic gift/hotel key card), palette paper or plastic plate to use as a palette (craft sheet will also work).

Whimsical Drawing Watercolor Books

ARTSY WEEKEND UPDATE

Dina  Wakley  Classes

Movin' a little slow this week.... BUT it's time to publish that class list as promised.....  These are the classes.  You can start signing up tomorrow by calling or emailing.

All classes are approximately 3 hours long.  You should bring your basic kit to most classes and there will be a limited number of additional supplies required (seriously, minimal).

DYING FOR DYLUSIONS ..... $45
Friday, July 13 ... 4pm to 7pm

Are you ready for some serious FUN!  Learn how to use spray inks by making this joyful, inky tag book using Dylusions ink sprays and stamps.  Dina will show you five techniques to use with the ink sprays (stenciling, wet on wet, ghosting, oil resist, and gesso resist).  What's exciting is you'll make and fold the book structure from just one sheet of paper.  Then you'll use fun and funky Dylusions stamps to decorate your book.  It's a colorful exlosion of joy!

ENCAUSTIC TAG BOOK, "Dear Self" ..... $50
Sat, July 14 ... 10am to 1pm

Come and learn about the ancient art of encaustics.  We'll be using beeswax and irons to make fun and addicting beeswax collages.  We'll play with stamps, inks, acrylic paint, beeswax..... oh my!  We'll add positive quotes to make the book a wonderful message of hope and encouragement. The tags will go in an accordion book structure that Dina will show you how to create.  Beeswax is fun and addictive..... come and play!

INTRODUCTION TO ART JOURNALING ..... $50

Have you been curious about art journaling, but are not sure where to start?  Come and play with Dina!  We'll explore what art journaling is and she will teach you techniques for creating fun and expressive pages.  We'll create backgrounds, image layers, and top texture.  We'll make several pages and you'll get a feel for playing, experimenting, and being free with your art.  Dina also will give you some tips for page topics and writing on your pages.  No previous art experience is required.

CHUNKY BACKGROUND TECHNIQUES BOOK ..... $50
Sun, July 15 ... 10am to 1pm

Join Dina for a celebration of background techniques!  We'll start by creating five backgrounds with different techniques -- scraping and lifting, monoprinting with plastic, modeling paste and stencils, watercoloring with spray ink, and gesso with masking tape ... so fun!  Then we'll cut down the backgrounds and bind them into a chunky little book.  You can use your book as a little art journal, a scrapbook, a book of quotes... the sky's the limit. 

As you can see.... these classes are fun and exciting. We have all the samples here for you to look at...  I hope you'll join us for as many as you can.  You will be so glad you do.
